Wireless Awareness
In order to make the most efficient and intelligent use of the network, it is important for both the user and application to be aware of the status of the system. This is especially important for wireless networks where network conditions are constantly changing. ExpressQ and Smart IP provide status information on the wireless system including:
- What network is being used
- Network characteristics: speed, latency, packet size, quality of service
- Network conditions: Signal strength, battery level, congestion
It is important for both the mobile and the server to know the characteristics of the network being used. This can include things like the status of the network connection, the signal strength or quality of service, the battery level of the wireless modem or device, etc. Such knowledge is used at different levels. Both the ExpressQ and Smart IP transport capability use this knowledge to adapt to the network and conditions and also to do filtering and packaging.
In addition, ExpressQ exposes some of this information to applications through an API, thus allowing the application to show the network status visually to the user, or to adjust its own logic according to the conditions.
